A kitchen garden is a small garden where vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown for regular use.

In this project, students identify gardening tools, prepare soil, sow seeds or plant seedlings, make vermicompost, protect and water plants, observe growth and harvest the produce.

  • Common plants suitable for a school kitchen garden include spinach, coriander, mint, tomato, brinjal, chilli and cucumber.
  • Plants need suitable soil, sunlight, water, nutrients, spacing and protection from pests.
  • Gardening tools must be used carefully and stored safely after cleaning.
  • Organic manure, compost, mulching and neem-based pesticide support healthy plant growth.

Activity 1: Visit to an agricultural farm, nursery or garden

Answer:

Different plants such as tomatoes, spinach, coriander, brinjal and mint are being grown in the nursery.

Q2Were all the plants planted at the same time? If not, why?

Answer:

No. The plants were planted at different times because each plant has its own suitable growing season and takes a different amount of time to mature.

Q3Can all the plants be grown in a kitchen garden? Answer Yes or No and give a reason.

Answer:

No. Some plants, such as mango trees, need much more space and deeper soil. Small vegetables, leafy plants and herbs are more suitable for a kitchen garden.

Q4How is the soil prepared for sowing or planting?

Answer:

The soil is ploughed or dug, loosened and cleared of stones and weeds. It is then mixed with manure or compost before seeds or seedlings are planted.

Q5How are the plants provided nutrition in addition to what they get from the soil?

Answer:

Plants receive additional nutrition from manure, compost, vermicompost, fertilisers and proper watering.

Q6How can plants be protected from any kind of harm from animals and pests?

Answer:

Plants can be protected by fencing the garden, using organic pesticides such as neem spray and placing a scarecrow to keep away birds and animals.

Plan the garden

Activity 2: Planning your school kitchen garden

Q1Are you planning to make your school kitchen garden in the land available in school, in pots, or in both?

Answer:

The kitchen garden can be made in both the available land and pots, depending on the space and materials available in the school.

Q2How are you going to calculate the area of your kitchen garden?

Answer:

We will measure the length and width of the selected rectangular area using a measuring tape. We will calculate its area using the formula: Area = Length × Width.

Q3What factors did you consider when selecting a location for the garden?

Answer:

We selected a place with good sunlight, proper water drainage, access to water and enough space for plants to grow. The paths also allow us to reach every plant easily.

Prepare plant nutrition

Activity 3: Making vermicompost

Q1Which materials did you use to make the vermicompost?

Answer:

We used kitchen waste, dry leaves, fruit peels, other biodegradable waste, water and red earthworms.

Q2What types of food scraps did you add to the bin?

Answer:

We added vegetable peels, fruit peels, coffee grounds and eggshells. We did not add meat, oily food, dairy products or citrus fruits.

Q3What changes did you notice in the compost bin over a period?

Answer:

The food scraps and dry leaves slowly decomposed. After some time, the material became dark, crumbly and rich, with an earthy smell.

Prepare the soil

Activity 4: Preparing the kitchen garden for planting

Q1How did you prepare the soil for planting?

Answer:

We removed stones, weeds and other waste from the soil. We then loosened the soil and mixed it thoroughly with organic manure.

Q2Did you use organic manure? If yes, what proportion did you use for mixing organic manure with soil?

Answer:

Yes. We mixed one part organic manure with three parts soil to make the soil fertile.

Activity 5: Sowing seeds and planting seedlings

Answer:

No. Small leafy plants required less space, whereas tomato and brinjal plants required more room to grow.

Protect and maintain

Activity 6: Taking care of plants

Q1What materials will you use for fencing?

Answer:

We will use bamboo sticks, wooden poles or old pipes as posts and strong string to join them.

Q2How many poles and what length of string will you need for fencing?

Answer:

The exact quantity depends on the size and perimeter of the garden. A larger garden requires more poles and a longer string. We will measure the boundary before collecting the materials.

Q3How do you know when a plant needs water?

Answer:

A plant needs water when the upper soil feels dry, the leaves begin to droop or the plant looks less fresh.

Q4How often do you need to water your plants?

Answer:

We should check the soil daily and water the plants in the morning or evening whenever needed. We must avoid overwatering and waterlogging.

Q5What is the best time for watering plants?

Answer:

Early morning or late afternoon is the best time because less water is lost through evaporation.

Q6What factors influence the quantity and frequency of watering?

Answer:

Weather, season, plant type, plant size, soil type, drainage and the growth stage of the plant affect how much and how often it should be watered.

Neem-based organic pesticide can be prepared by chopping about 500 g of neem leaves, mixing them with 5 litres of water and keeping the mixture in a covered container for about 14 days. Strain the liquid and spray it carefully under adult supervision.

Activity 7: Observing your plants grow

This is a model observation record. Replace the dates, heights and observations with the actual data from your garden.

Take photographs or draw sketches from the same angle every week so that changes in height, leaf colour, flowering and pest attack can be compared easily.

Activity 8: Harvesting

Answer:

We harvested spinach, tomatoes and brinjals.

Q2How did you know they were ready for harvesting?

Answer:

The vegetables had reached the proper size, changed to their mature colour and looked fresh and ripe.

Q3Which tools did you use to harvest the plants?

Answer:

We used gardening shears, a garden trowel and our hands.

Q4What precautions did you take to avoid damaging the plants while harvesting?

Answer:

We handled the plants gently and used the tools carefully. We cut the produce without pulling or damaging the stems, roots and remaining leaves.
